If you have not made it up to the Cattaraugus County Museum to see our current exhibit, “The Greatest Event of the Year: The Cattaraugus County Fair in Print and Poster,” there is still time. The exhibit, which features ephemera advertising the fair from the turn of the 20th century, is slated to run through the end of November.
The lithograph posters, with stunning illustrations in vivid color, were never meant to last; they were designed to be temporary, to be torn down and disposed of once the fair was over. Fortunately for us, a number of examples of these posters, along with tickets, postcards, premium books receipts and more, were preserved in a scrapbook. They have been painstakingly restored to their original beauty and framed for display. Come see them before the exhibit ends!
The Cattaraugus County Museum is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are located in the Stone House, 9824, Route 16 in Machias. Call 716-353-8200 for more information, or visit our website at www.cattco.org/museum.
